I am logined as Administrator trying to run regedit. Yet it replies
"Register editing is prohibited by Administrator" though I never knowingly
prohibited it.

How do I un-prohibit it?

1. Make sure the computer is completely virus/malware-free since this
can be a symptom of infection:

2. If the machine is clean, see:

Lift Restrictions - Task Manager, Regedit and CMD (Line 275) -

Is there a way to remove this restriction from within Windows without
instally a third-party software?
It is difficult to accept that this operating system is designed to require
a third-party software to perform basic settings

The link to Kellys Korner is a script (.vbs) file not software per say.
It edits the registry for you by removing the restrictive registry keys.
Well written scripts are better than manually editing the registry, IMO.

If you are worried about the code, right-click the 'regtmcmdrestore.vbs'
file and select "edit" to view the code in notepad.

Thank you.
I prefer to be in control of any changes to the registry - in case of side
effects (Windows taught me to expect side effects) this helps. Or I might
want to restrict registry editing again without asking for another script.
Is it known which exactly registry keys need to be removed (or their value
changed)?

Do as suggested and download Kelly's script. Right-click it and open it
in Notepad. There you will see the answer to your question.
