Locked Drives

I recently install latest XP SP2 update, after re-booting access to both the
D drive and A drive has been denied. It comes up with a box titled
'Restriction Warning' with the content reading "administrator has prohibited
access to CD/DVD ROM Drives" . This is a soul use PC with 1 account which has
full administrator rites. Any ideas as to how I can gain access to the drives
again????

Read the following article but don't apply everything one by one. Just read
the paragraph where the problem is being solved.

http://phorums.com.au/archive/index.php/t-158640.html

You can also try this:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=752774

If both above doesn't work then try this:
1. Click Start -- Run - type GPEDIT.MSC and press Enter
2. Expand to:
Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local
Policies -
Security Options
3. Check the settings of "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally
logged-on user only" and "Restrict floppy access to locally logged-on user
only". Set them to "Disable". If they were already set to disable then set
them to "Enable" apply changes and then again set them to "Disable".

Hope this help, let us know!

Hi RajKohli

Read through the suggested threads, one quick (dum) question, where will I
find the desktop utilites to uninstall/reinstall. My PC is an Acer Power F5
which comes with Acer's empowering technology (which never gets used).
I tried the enable/disable route, that didn't work so need to try the
desktop utilities route.

Bye 4 now.

Please follow the fourm suggestions carefully and donot uninstall any
software you are not sure about
====================================================

The key was when I tried to uninstall the Intel utility set, it told me I
could not because only one user can be logged in while removing it. Huh?
I'm the only dolt logged in, so what gives? I was going to go to the
directory and do a brute force delete when there it was, burried deep in the
folders of the Intel utilities, I saw the red slashed circle icons that were
the same as I was seeing in exporer that prohibited my access to cd/dvd
roms, etc. That must be the program that prohibited my administrator access
to these device! A little more poking and sure enough, it turned out to be
the third party program that spawned the awServ applet. I went into Window
Task Manager, killed the process and a few others I didn't recognize, which
apparently killed the undocumented logon and allowed me to remove the Intel
utility set (recently recommended by Kim Komando) and, viola, the
permissions to the drives returned to normal upon reboot.

To uninstall click Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
If Window didn't let you uninstall Intel Utility then endtask some unwanted
task through Task Manager by right-clicking on Taskbar and choose Task
Manager. If you are not sure or get puzzeled with Task list then first try
quiting unwanted software from Notification area (near the clock) and then
uninstall.

Let us know!

Hi

Just to let you know I found the culprit in the end after a lot of head
scratching. The computer in question is an Acer which has empowering
technology built in as standard, it seems that the windows update KB927891
caused a conflit with the program Acer LANScope Agent. I removed this program
which monitors the A & CD/DVD drives (I would never use it anyway) and
hepresto, access restored.

Hope this may be of help to others who use the Acer empowering program and
experience the same problems as me.

Thanks for the help.
