un/?able to connect for updates

I got great internet access on my new laptop. except that
Windows checking for updates looks for an internet connection but can't
find it.
Using a home LAN, Direcway satellite system
Opera browses just fine but IE has trouble - can't go to microsoft.com?

clarifications in order.
Internet access is thru a XP pro machine which has a USB satellite modem
on it.
The OPERA browser on the client laptop can access the internet, but trying
to check for windows updates via start>help and support>windows update
can't find the connection.
In fact IE can't go anywhere at all. This page cannot be displayed.
