Umountable boot volume 000032

My friend bought his HP Pavilion XT993 with XP Home to me with an
Unmountable_Boot_Volume blue screen. Since the second set of numbers in the
error message ended in 0032, this indicates a damaged file per Microsoft
Article 297185. He does not nor does he think he has ever received the OS
CD. I downloaded the six floppy boot set WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE. When it starts
to load, after the "Setup is inspecting your computers' hardware
configuration" message, I get "File \biosinfo.inf could not be loaded. The
error code is 4106" I do have an XP Pro CD. Is the Pro repair program the
same as Home? Are there any indications to let me know if the hard drive is
dead? Ram? Any suggestions? Thanks

HPs, as with most large OEM builders, send out an OS Recovery system (CD or
hidden partitition).

He does not have it. What can we do next?

Download a drive diagnositc utility from the hard drive manufacturer's
web site. That will create a bootable floppy disk. Run the diagnostics
from there.

Contact HP for a restore CD set. Charges may apply.

No. The fileset is different and there may also be detection code which
will come into play for both OS type and vendor.

Given the current low cost of drives, it's not a bad plan. You can then
simply copy the files from the "old" drive. Drives *do* have a life
expectancy.

Since the owner does not have the restore CDs, you should contact HP for a
replacement set.

In the meantime, you may be able to mount the drive in another machine and
simply burn the contents of the \i386 folder to CD, then use a Win9x boot
disk (with smartdrv and CD drivers!) to gain access to the drive and run
winnt.exe.
