Unmountable_boot_volume....with a twist

D

Darrell Shuman

My friend bought his HP Pavilion XT993 with XP Home to me with an
Unmountable_Boot_Volume blue screen. Since the second set of numbers in the
error message ended in 0032, this indicates a damaged file per Microsoft
Article 297185. He does not nor does he think he has ever received the OS
CD. I downloaded the six floppy boot set WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE. When it starts
to load, after the "Setup is inspecting your computers' hardware
configuration" message, I get "File \biosinfo.inf could not be loaded. The
error code is 4106" I do have an XP Pro CD. Is the Pro repair program the
same as Home? Are there any indications to let me know if the hard drive is
dead? Ram? Any suggestions? Thanks
