Not sure if this is the place to post this, I suppose the Vista group
may be better, but why not...
1. I believe users would benefit greatly from better tools to review
the processes/background services running on their system. The logic
is: almost all adware (and a good number of virtuses, Trojans, etc...)
are implemented as services... Also a good number of legit applications
install services and don't properly uninstall them, leaving them active
to absorb processing power and memory.
What can be done: Provide better security around Windows Services,
prompt users when unsigned services are being installed and provide
them with tools to search a malware database against unsigned
services... In addition to security enhancements, provide users the
ability to trace services back to specific applications. Right now,
looking at my services running I have no clue what the majority of them
are doing for me.
Such simple steps would go a long way to improving performance and
securing windows
2. Driver updates: I often have to reinstall drivers for devices. Some
recent examples are my cell phone modem driver over USB and MIDI to USB
bridge driver. I have to install both of these at least twice a week
and the system requires a reboot each time. The files aren't become
corrupt, so obviously there is something faulty in the Windows driver
probe.
