Two Dialogue Boxes On Startup

For a few weeks now I have been getting 2 dialog boxes every time I boot up.

The first one says:
WINDOWS XP SET UP Please go to control panel to install and configure
system components.

When I click OK, the box disappears, till I reboot.

The second is a real pain.
AUTOMATIC UPDATES
Updating your computer is almost complete. You must restart your computer
for the updates to take effect
Do you want to restart your computer now?
Restart Now Restart Later

I can sometimes drag this box below the system tray and carry on working
without a problem, but now and again a 5 minute countdown starts, and unless
I click on restart later, it will reboot, which is a pain when I'm burning
etc.

Can anyone help?

Some update is not succeeding. If you turn off autoupdate, and do a 'Custom'
install, you can learn which one. This article has ways to fix those problems.
