I have installed XP sp2 but want to use my Norton firewall not MS which
keeps alerting me about my security status each time I boot-up. I've gone
into Windows security center, clicked on the 'change the way security
center alerts me' and un-checked the firewall box - leaving the other two
options checked. It appears that the only way to close the windows security
center is by the 'X' upper right of the window, unfortunately every time I
re-boot I find that the box is re-checked by default! How do I prevents
this? The security center doesn't appear to be recognising that I have
Norton installed as my default firewall.

Hi

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick when
you reboot, you can do the following:

To "solve" this problem, you can disable the Security Center service.

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)

06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Note: WinXPSP2_Documentation.zip contains all the .doc downloads...
