turn on services

Several services were disabled. Believe me, I did not choose to have them
disabled and don't understand how that happened.

Anyway, I went to run -- services.msc and changed all of the services that
were turned off to "automatic" and retarted the ones that could be turned on.
However, since I don't know what a lot of those services do, I wonder if
some of them should be "manual" rather than "automatic." Also, should some
of them not be started?

Is there a list of all the services that can tell me that? If not, are
there any that I should be worried about?

Thanks.

What services were disabled?

Take a look here for info on services and their standard settings.

As to what caused the changes, you need to investigate that. What changes
were made to the system right before this happened - software? Hardware?
drivers?

What is the malware status of the computer and how do you check that?

Someone suggested that I turn off some of the startup programs on the system
configuration utility (I since found out that is not the best way to do it).

Somehow a bunch of services got turned off. It is puzzling because I
certainly did not want to turn any services off. I don't know how to explain
it and was certainly surprised after several hours of trying to figure out
what was wrong. I did a lot of checking for viruses and malware and suppose
that they could have been the cause but I doubt it.

I don't know which services were turned off but there were quite a few.

Thank you for the concern and references. I may well need them in the
future.

Ok, good luck. Post back if you have any more questions.
