Modem service. How I make it available?

The other user of this computer objected to the Modem service always showing
up in the list of applications in Task Manager, and because we use DSL, she
convinced me to disable the Modem service. I have completely forgotten
which tool I used to do so. I do not think that it was msconfig, and I have
not yet found it using services.msc.

Which tool allows users to enable, disable, remove, make automatic, or make
manual, etc. whatever it is that makes the modem available? I need it to
send faxes, although extremely rarely, via the fax/modem functionality built
into the motherboard.

Hi,
the Modem Service, as you put it, is actually a Device so will be in the
Device Manager. This you get to by going to "My Computer", right-clicking
on it and selecting "Properties" this brings up the System Control Panel.
On the System Control Panel you'll find a tab named "Hardware" and on that a
button named Device Manager. Your Modem should already be highlighted
because it is disabled. Simply double-click upon it and uncheck the
"Disable in this profile" check box. Unless it has been completely
uninstalled from the computer, in which case it's going to be more
complicated.
