While trying to install SP2 on WinXP Home Edition (no SP) I get the
following error message almost right at the end of the update. Then it rolls
back.
The network location from which the files should be copied
c:\windows\ServicePackfiles\i386/mswincrt,man is not available.Insert
Windows XP Service Pack 2 source files now

Are you installing from a SP2 CD from MS? or did you download the
full-network (so called) SP2 file from MS, or were you doing an on-line
Windows Update?

Did you disable all startups, including any Antivirus ?
But do keep your software firewall up.

From a SP2 cd ordered from MS. AVG anti virus was on and zonealarm. Their
was more to the beginning of the message.

Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, windows must restore
the original versions of these files.

You need to do a fix beforehand. But you must have a retail or full version
on CD of Windows XP.
I'd suggest running System File Checker. Place your XP CD in the CDROM
drive. (If setup pops-up just close (exit) that window).
From XP menus, select "Command Prompt". (or from Run menu, type
CMD <enter>

in the command prompt window type
SFC /SCANNOW <enter>

That would get System File Checker running, and recheck your versions of
Windows system files

I did read your note the first time. Be certain to turn OFF your Antivirus
before applying SP2.
Again, minimize completly all your running & startup programs.
Given you have SP2 on CD, disconnect your internet connection, and turn off
zonealarm as well.
Then you can apply / start SP2 setup.
