trying to connect a USB and Firewire external drive

Hi *,

I have been unssuccesfully trying to connect my external hard drive with a
large FAT32 partition (80 Gb (more than the 32 Gbs that MS wants ;-))) to
my computer

I do know the drive itself works because I can 'mount' it without any
problems as a FAT32 drive using other OSs, for example, Debian's knoppix
(after taking it out of the enclosure). My drive is a Maxtor in a Wiebetech
enclosure

For some reason WIndows XP appears to detect it but I don't see the drive
listed as a new storage item nor do new windows pop up as I remember was
the case while uing WIndows 2000

I have tried all 4 jumper positions, still I don't see the external drive
even if I refresh the window

What is wrong/going on here?

So do/should I have any hope?

if your xp os is ntfs it will not read fat32

XP can read FAT32, NTFS is a file format not an OS.

I think you are mistaken on that one.

MS does not want for us to use FAT32, so they would only read
FAT32partitions that are less than 32 Gbs

There is plenty of docs about it even at MS sites

Also I am using an external drive

XP won't format bigger than a 32 MB FAT32 partition, but it
will read any partition.

Albretch:
Uh-oh. I see by the responses to your query that the FAT32 - NTFS "thing" is
raising its ugly head.

(Nearly) needless to say that's not your problem.

I assume from what you've written that when you open Windows Explorer, your
EHD is not shown there so that you are unable to read or write from or to
that device.

Go to Start > right-click on My Computer > Manage > Computer Management >
Disk Management.
Is the EHD listed there? And if so, can you assign it a drive letter?

If not right click it and choose "Change Drive letter and path"

Can Disk Manager (Admin Tool -> Computer Management --> Disk Management)
see your drive?

Can PowerQuest Partition Manager see your drive?

When I go:

Start > My computer > Manage > Storage

and I click on "Disk Management" in order to assign a letter to the
disk so that Windows XP can manage it.

I get:

"You do not have access rights to Logical Disk Manager on <work station
name>"

am I doing it the way I should? Why is MS making life fro us harder?
Isn't the OS supposed to tae care of it itself? I remember when I used
to have Windows 2K I could see the device right away ...

Also while using a version of knoppix as a test in another OS, each
time I plug the USB cable in the back of the unit, the drive's LED goes
off and then on when I take if off. I did it repeatedly snd tried the
onboard USB connections as well as the USB card ones!

OK, I tried on another computer and I can see my drive listed there,
but I don't see a drive letter say 'E:\' assigned to it when I go 'my
computer'

Also someone showed me his USB pen drive worked just fine

How do you do it with an external drive?
