Plextor PX-750UF external DVD burner w/firewire or USB not recogni

Hi, I've been beating my head against the wall trying to get this new DVD
burner to work on a XP Pro SP2 system. Actually, two systems. One is a Dell
Inspiron 8200 and the other a Dell Inspiron 8600. The results are the same on
both computers.

In Device Manager, this is what happens:

On both computers, using the USB connection, XP makes the new hardware found
sound and then a USB Mass Storage Device entry appears under Universal Serial
Bus Controllers. It has the yellow exclamation mark next to it, and the
device status is listed as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". The
location is "Location 0 (DVDR PX-750A)".

The 8600 is using an Intel 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller.
The 8200 is using an Intel 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller (USB 1.1)

On both computers, using the firewire connection (4-pin, the Plextor is
externally powered by it's own power cord), a SBP2 Compliant IEEE 1394 Device
appears. And then under DVD/CD-ROM drives, a "PLEXTOR DVDR PX-750A IEEE 1394
SBP2 Device" appears. It has a yellow exclamation mark. The device status is
listed as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". The location is "LUN 0".

On the 8200, disconnecting the device results in a blue screen, an
IRQ_NOT_LESS_EQUAL or similar I believe. It goes by too quick to jot it down,
and I didn't catch what module it was in. The 8600 does not blue screen on
disconnect.

Both have a Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

For the firewire, I have installed the following two post-SP2 hotfixes:
KB885222 and KB904412

The firewire cable and USB cable are known to be good. The USB ports on both
computers are known to be good. The firewire ports on both computers are
known to be good. All known to be good by using them with other devices.

It does sound like it could be the drive itself. Unfortunately, I do not
have a third computer running a different operating system to check this on.
Nor do I have a friend with a Mac who could check it out for me. So does
anybody have any suggestions? Better yet, has anybody gotten one of these to
work on their system? I've contacted Plextor's tech support, but it's taking
them quite a bit of time to get back to me.

Thanks in advance,
-David

I have a firewire drive but not Plextor. The only time that I had trouble
installing it was when I had a Virtual CD program installed. Do you have
software of that type installed?

If yes, this is how I fixed it:
Uninstalled the virtual drive program. Installed the DVDR. Changed it's
drive letter to something like M:. Then reinstalled the virtual drive
program. Sorry if this doesn't help but thought it worth mentioning. I
don't think virtual drive software cares about the brand you're trying to
install - it just very persistent about having that first available drive
letter (after fixed hard drives) all to itself.

Thanks for the info.

Turns out it was a combination of problems. I was able to hook the DVD
burner up to a Linux machine, which confirmed that the unit was most likely
bad. An exchange and it's working now. One of those two hotfixes I applied
solved the blue screen when I disconnected the DVD burner. So a replacement
DVD burner and those hotfixes got it working properly on both machines. No
more blue screens. :)

You're welcome!
It's kind of frustrating to spend hours troubleshooting only to find out
that a replacement works perfectly with little or no effort. It's happened
to me too. At least it's educational working through the issue.
