Troubleshooting XP freezes

I have an ongoing random problem and am at my wits end. I have searched the
WEB, updated drivers, checked event logs, etc. etc. and the problem remains.
I get random freezes of my entire computer. There does not seem to be any
relationship to anything that I am doing. Last night, when I turned the
computer on, the screen froze before it even completed putting all the icons
on the desktop. I went through three tries before I was able to go for more
than one or two minutes before a freeze occurred. When the freeze happens,
the screen pixelates, the mouse freezes, and I can only reboot using the soft
reboot button. If I try to use the hard reboot (on/off) button, nothing
happens. I have a NVIDIA GEForce 4200 graphics card and a KDS RAD-5 monitor.
I uninstalled both drivers and updated the NVIDIA driver (from their web
site) and it recognizes the RAD-5 monitor. Yesterday the computer started to
do something new: it rebooted by itself. I have McAfee on with privacy,
firewall, and anti-virus. I also have checked using Spybot and AdSubtract.
Any suggestions for further troubleshooting will be welcome. I am running
the machine without a cover (long story), but checking the heat levels I do
not see anything out of line and it sometimes does this when the machine is
very cold. I am running as a standalone machine and would like very much to
(a) make sure my machine's registry, services, etc, are optimally set up for
standalone use, and (b) clean the registry with some sort of software to get
rid of old stuff and make sure the new stuff is properly set up. All
suggestions welcome!

Can you state any specifics? How long has this been a problem? Can you make
specific reference to events (good or bad); SP2 or other MS updates, drivers,
other S/W installs?
How often does McAfee scan the entire system? (any McAfee reports showing
creepy crawlies?)
Do you have any recent (prior to problems) System Restore points?
