I can't find sndvol32.exe in my compaq quick restore system recovery cds
(3cds) which are the only WinXp backup discs I have, so I can't proceed as
recommended in other posts. Even though I still have sound, but very low and
I can't add the volume icon in the taskbar. I think I started with this
problem after running an ad aware and spybot program.
How can I get another copy of this file, or make it work as it should?
Thanks very much

sndvol32.exe lives in these two folders...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32

It's a compressed file on the CD. SNDVOL32.EXE is listed as SNDVOL32.EX_ in
the I386 folder on your CD.

Also look for an I386 folder on your machine.

Thanks Wes for your help, I've found "sndvol32.ex_" in "c:\i386". I've
expanded it in "c:\windows\system32", but I don't know what to do now. I have
to install it or something, or it should work by itself?
Thanks again

Andres,

This will open the Sound Recorder...
Start | Run | Type: sndvol32 | OK

There should be a shortcut to Sound Recorder (sndvol32.exe) in...
Start\All Programs\Accessories\Entertainment

If not...
Create a shortcut to sndvol32.exe.
Right click Desktop | New | Shortcut |
Paste this in for the location:

%SystemRoot%\System32\sndrec32.exe

Click Next | Change the name to: Sound Recorder |
Click Finish

Right click the Start button | Explore All Users |
Click the [+] next to Programs | Click the [+] next to Accessories |
Click on Entertainment | Drag the Sound Recorder shortcut into
the right hand pane
