Trouble with importing an existing web site.

A few weeks ago the PC I was using to create our web site on locally and then
push the content to our remote hosting service crashed. I have since rebuilt
the PC and reloaded Frontpage 2003. Since I didn't have a backup copy of our
locally created web site I thought it would be a OK to simply copy our remote
hosted site back down to the local PC and move on from there. The problem I
am having is when I pull the current "live" web site down into Frontpage 2003
to create a local copy, it only seems to be getting the text and pictures and
not the style sheet or template I originally used to create the sites
appearance. Any idea as to why this is happening?

Thanks, John Zawacki

Don't import the site; just open it and publish back to your computer - the
technical term is "Publish" not "Import".

Open the live site via File > Open Site then connect to the remote site as
per the usual procedure, then Publish the remote copy to the local machine.

Andrew,

I just tried as you suggested and I get the same results. The text and
pictures are all there but the style sheets or templates (not sure of the
correct technical term) aren't. Any other ideas?

Thanks, John Zawacki

How are you opening the live/remote site in FP?

Thomas,

I'm opening the remote site using "File > Open Site then connect to the
remote site via FTP, then publishing the remote copy to the local machine. I
don't understand why all of the features that are on the live site aren't
being transfered to the local site.

Thanks,
John

Since you are opening a FTP site, which means there are no FP extensions, then there is no FP
configuration info available to be published back to your local machine. When FP publishes to a
server without the extensions, the configuration info for the site is not created (the extensions on
the server created the configuration files, as they are never published). You have to re-apply any
theme, re-build your navigation structure, redo any shared border or include pages, etc.

you need to be publishing back to your local machine via http:, or the whole
thing will get screwed up - you have to download all files manually -
including css files etc if you do this by FTP.

If you use frrontpage http: mode, publishing will copy all associated files
back to your machine.

Andrew,

OK. This is probably a dumb question but how do I use Frontpage HTTP mode to
copy all files back to my local machine?

Thanks,

John
