today for the first time the Internet Explorer shortcuts on my desktop do not
take me to the web pages when i double click the print preview screen comes
up and when i single the menu opens with the Print option on top

What do you have showing in File TYpes for the URL association?
(Internet Shortcut)

Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the association
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and let us know what you have as
the default application. (The one in bold)
It sounds like you might have Print as the default instead of Open.

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

You get there as I have already indicated.
I gave you 4 methods, depending on your O/S.
I don't know how I can make it clearer.

Open Windows Explorer.
Click Tools on the menu.
Click Folder Options.
Click File Types.
Scroll down to the association for URL.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
