trouble sending and receiving faxes

My fax machine will not send or receive. I am having trouble faxing there is
a busy signal. Does not recognize phone line hooked up. I now have DSL. The
internet works fine. When I send a fax no dial tone it says phone line in use
or not connected. When i recieve a fax it says error occur.

You cannot fax over a DSL or Cable line, only with a dial-up modem. You could
access a 3rd party faxing facility like eFax.com but that is not free.

I have had the same problem and it was because my phone line had another dial
tone. I am using Windows XP. I went to Start /control panel/performance and
maintenance/administrative tools/computer management/device manager, there I
went to modems in the list. I have selected the modem I am using with the
right button of the mouse and then selected properties. In the modem tab
there is a box at the bottom that says Wait for dial tone before dialing,
this was checked, i have unchequed it and the modem functions perfectly now.

Using fax when you have DSL requires that you obtain a DSL line filter
suitable for connecting a standard voice
telephone to the DSL line, then connect your analog fax modem or fax machine
to the phone line through the line filter. Your DSL provider has these
filters, as does your local Radio Shack store:
