Trouble keeping ActiveX control settings

Guest

I'm having a horrible time trying to run a virus scan on my computer. The software I have will not uninstall or re-install. (Unexplained errors) Thus I've been trying free online virus scanners, however, they all require ActiveX controls to be allowed. I have IE 6 and I have made the necessary adjustments to my security settings to enable ActiveX controls several times. I still get the same message from every virus scan: your ActiveX are not enabled. My problem is: they ARE! Even when I go back and check the setting, it's enabled!

Has anyone run into this problem before? Should I just try re-installing IE altogether?

Hi Ria :)

Try the following and see if it helps.

Also, if you have McAfee AV, try unchecking the Active X control in that
program to see if that helps.

You can check the following concerning ActiveX components trying to reach
defunct servers. If these particular ones don't show up, check for any
other anomalous entries:

Take a look in %SYSTEMDRIVE%\%SystemRoot%\Downloaded Program Files (these
are ActiveX components), and see if you have something there called Tracker
Class. If so, right click and click Remove (don't just delete it). This is
a hi-jack program that's trying to reach a server that's no longer working,
so it hangs up.

There are some others that are similar in effect also, so if you don't have
Tracker Class, right click on each thing in this folder then select
Properties. The Codebase line will often give you a clue as to where
something came from. If it looks like it might not belong, try Remove.
Things like Sun Java Runtimes and Macromedia stuff like Shockwave or Apple
Quicktime are normal, so use some judgement about what you eliminate.
Mostly you'll be asked to re-download them if you Remove something that's
actually needed.

Also check in Add-Remove Programs for Surfchoice 1.1 and remove it. It is
also tracker software to a defunct server.

Additonal important information about removing ActiveX controls is in the
following Microsoft articles:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q240797
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q154850

Hope this helps.

Hello RiaLucia -

Running W98se and IE6 SP-1 here, and generally do not permit running Active
Scripting nor Active X. Naturally, one must allow both when utilizing the
services of on-line scanners, and in particular, those which need to
download and install updating files to be current, scan, etc.

Now, of the 6 or so on-line scanners I use from time to time, *only*
Symantecs has given me trouble in the exact way as that which you've
described. All of the others install and work without flaw. If you are
running an "in-house onboard" AV program, it is probably a good bet it may
be interfering as well. Try disabling it's "resident shield" or whatever
they may call the background AV protection that it offers.

These sites work for me:
RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
Command on Demand
http://www.authentium.com/solutions/cod/index.cfm
Freedom on-line virus check
http://www.freedom.net/viruscenter/onlineviruscheck.html
TrendMicro Housecall (also detects some trojans)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
BitDefender Scan Online
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Kapersky Online Virus Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html
The above scanner works differently from most; it is a server based scanner,
and will only scan individual files, or directories which are limited to 1
MB in total size. It will not do a full system scan.

Hauri LiveCall Online virus scanning
http://www.globalhauri.com/html/products/livecall.html
The above is also server based if I remember correctly

Panda on-line virus scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp
I've only used this one once or twice, and don't particularly care for it.

McAfee FreeScan
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp
Don't remember if I ever used this one. Not a big McAfee fan.

Had trouble running Symantecs scanner though:

Symantec Security Check (page offers security and/or virus scan)
http://snipurl.com/7gz1

Three different on-line Trojan scanners, which I've used with success:

GFI Trojanscan
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
PestPatrol on-line Trojan scanner
http://www.pestscan.com/home.asp
Sygate Technologies Trojanscan
