trouble installing scan software - cannot copy file

I purchased an Epson perfection 3490 Photo scanner and have been unable to
install the Scan software. When I inserted the CD, the installation
proceeded until I got a message that said:
<<Could not copy files. Check the setup disc, then run setup again. >>

Then the message: <<An error occurred during setup, restart your computer,
then run setup again.>>

I restarted and tried several times, but still got the same message.

Then I went to the Epson support website and downloaded a new version of the
driver for XP
When I tried to install that – I got the very same error message.

I emailed to the Epson support site and they suggested various solutions,
such as removing all installed parts and starting over (which I did) and
running msconfig and getting rid of all startup processes except Microsoft
and trying the install. I did that also and still got the same message.

I have XP professional - sp2 running on an Acer laptop with 512 mb ram and
60 GB hardrive.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much for your interset in my problem!

My laptop is about 18 months old - it is a TravelMate 290 and I do have USB
2.0 capabilty.

when I first tried the software installation, I had not updated to XP sp2 -
I thought that might be it, so installed all updates from Microsoft. I still
had the same problem.

I also ran msconfig and suspended all non-Microsoft processes before trying
the install that way. Still no luck,

Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and see if there's any Epson
Program. If yes, remove it. Go to C:\Program Files. Look for a Epson Folder
and delete it. Then go to Start>Run type: regedit. Navigate to
HKey_Local_Machine\Software. If you find a Epson Folder there delete it.
Same at Hkey_Current_User\Software.

Thanks for replying Rich - I finally got it working after following Epson's
additional suggestion to log in as administrator.

came accross your installation problem and I just could'nt resist butting-in.
I have the same problem except its with hp scanjet. hp tells me its my
windows installer. I checked that out and as far as i know it is the latest
version and running successfully because it installs my other applcations.
do you think your "resolve" would work for me? rt now I am the listed
administrator what would I have to do

Dear Harold,

I don't quite remember exactly what I did but here is the majority of it -
it seems like it would be worth your trying it.

Log in as adminstrator, or start a new account with Admin privileges.

- Click START
- Click RUN
- Type MSCONFIG and hit OK
- Click SERVICES
- Enable HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES
- Disable remaining services
- Click APPLY once
- Click GENERAL
- Disable LOAD STARTUP ITEMS
- Click APPLY and close
- Go ahead restart the computer, then try installing the scan software again.

After that, go back and undo all that disabling to restore things.

Good luck!
Barbara
