trouble connecting to my hotmail account...

Why am I suddenly having trouble connecting to my hotmail account, up until
yesterday, it worked fine?

When trying to synchronize headers, I get the error, "The service is
currently unavailable. Try again later. The server responded 'Service
Unavailable."

However... I can get to my hotmail account if I use the IE browser interface
and login directly to my hotmail account. So I know the service is working at
this time.

And... I have another hotmail account setup as an email account within
Outlook and this hotmail account is working fine.

I am running MS Office Outlook 2003.

it's been pretty widely publicised - MS are stopping POP access to
hotmail unless you have a paid account. For all new accounts this is
immediate - for existing accounts there is a phased withdrawal of
service ending in march or April this year.

Hmmm, over the last 2 days it has worked intermittently. You would think that
it would not work at all. Oh well, I wonder what other free email accounts
will work with Outlook...

BTW, My Hotmail accounts are set as HTTP type email accounts in Outlook, not
POP/SMTP type accounts. Does this make any difference? Or is this policy
applied to anyone who tries to access the Hotmail servers and accounts using
an application like Outlook?

Http is the way Hotmail is accessed in both Outlook and Outlook Express.
Yahoo mail is POP however.

You said they are stopping 'POP' access to hotmail accounts. If Outlook is
using HTTP, why am I having problems?

Thanks for your help..

They's stopping HTTP access to Hotmail accounts. If you pay, you can use
POP or HTTP.

Gordon says they are stopping POP.
Brian says they are stopping HTTP.

Okay, which is it...? HTTP, POP or both?

Thanks,
Gregg

:
Both. It's http access in a POP compliant email client!

Gordon misspoke. Hotmail never allowed POP access to free accounts, that I
recall.

Yes. Technically, I suppose it's http access in a pop compliant email
client!

Okay, I paid the $19.95 for the MSN Hotmail Plus subscription. I've received
an email confirming my purchase. The confirmation also includes instructions
for accessing your Hotmail account using Outlook Express. However, it doesn't
mention MS Office Outlook 2003, but it should still work the same. I should
probably give it some time, but I noticed that I still have intermittent
problems accessing my hotmail account using Outlook.

I'm still getting the server connection errors.

Guys, i am also having the same problem and i have also paid there highest
fee i think which was 99, or 59 for the space...
what should i do to get this problem sovled?

Gregg, have u figured out what to do?

No, I still haven't been able to resolve the problem. Now I wish I could get
a refund on my subscription. I've set up a gmail account, which does support
POP connections. It works very well. I will be phasing out my hotmail address
unless I can figure out why it has trouble working with Outlook 2003 now.

BTW, I received an email promo thing from Microsoft which bundles their MSN
hotmail service with Outlook 2003 for something like $45/yr. I think they are
calling it Microsoft Office Outlook Live. I wonder how that differs from what
I currently have...

This must be a wide-spread problem.
I've been getting the exact same results. This happens to me in
Outlook Express as well as the Hotmail access from MyMSN. It's also
happening on 2 PCs.

Weird thing is that with Outlook Express, I have one email account
configured that has this problem. Another account, using the same
Outlook Exp program, works fine. So, I have to think this problem is
specific to the servers that the accounts reside on.

There are reports that the MSN servers are experiencing trouble.

Why then can I access my hotmail account via the msn portal but not via
Outlook 2007 - Beta 2.
