Connecting Outlook to Hotmail

I had a workable connection from Outlook 2003 to a long-time Hotmail account
(was paid, is now free) and I lost the connection recently for updates on
emails -- I happened to switch internet service providers at that time also.

I tried first to Change and then to Add the Hotmail account in Outlook, but
the test message wasn't successful. I then downloaded Outlook Connector
which set up a new Inbox but wouldn't give me access to messages. Then I
redid the connection manually and it worked after I retyped the User name
with @Hotmail.com added.

I am using a new Hotmail account to experiment.

Only now, Outlook Connector is giving me an error on displaying new Hotmail
messages because it cannot **update my calendar** and it can't because I'm
**not a subscriber**. The download page for OC clearly states that it works
w/ paid and nonpaid Hotmail accounts, so why is this useless program giving
me an error message? I don't HAVE a calendar in Hotmail in any event.

So, please tell me how to get the connection to Hotmail to work, by whatever
means. I would rather uninstall Outlook Connector and make the connection
manually. I am just exhausted w/ trying to fix this.

Your old Hotmail account has probably been forcibly converted to a Live
account. It still uses the @hotmail.com domain for your e-mail address
but it is now a Live account. Because Hotmail now has multiple domains
for all its account - @hotmail.com and @live.com - you are required to
specify the domain in your login so it knows to which domain your
username applies to find the account. Yahoo Mail did the same recently
and added @ymail.com and @rocketmail.com to their domains, so now when
you login you have to add @yahoo.com or the other two to complete your
username. Without it, Yahoo's login wouldn't know to which domain your
username alone would belong.

Yes, you do have a Calendar function in your Hotmail account. In fact,
when you click on the Calendar link when using the webmail interface,
you have to choose between using their Beta version or the classic
version of Calendar. Go try it for yourself. Logon using the webmail
interface and notice there is a Calendar either in the left-frame under
"Related places" or under the "More" link at the top. The Related
Places link to Calendar goes to whichever is your current calendar mode.
The More link to Calendar pops up a choice to use the Beta version or
the classic one. Perhaps the Outlook Connection add-on doesn't yet
support the Beta version of Calendar, so switch back to the classic one.

If you don't use the Calendar provided with your Hotmail account, why do
you care if there is an error message saying that you cannot sync
Outlook to it? You said "I don't have a calendar in Hotmail" so
obviously you didn't know Hotmail included one and you haven't been
using it, so you shouldn't care that the add-on cannot sync to it. As
long as it syncs to your e-mail folders, that all you apparently
expected of it.
