trouble burning dvds

i am new to burning dvds, the process works okay on my computer but when i
try to play it back on my dvd player, sometimes it works and sometimes it
doesnt. When it does work it seems to jump occassionally. I quite often get
colours across the screen or it stops. What am i doing wrong. I have tried
playing it on more than one dvd player and the problem still occurs.

1. What software are you burning the DVD with?
2. Have you tried a different brand of DVD disk?

I am using Nero Startsmart as the program
I have tried using TDK DVD-R 16 speed & also Princo 4 speed. I was told to
try burning them at 2x speed and have tried this. it has improved but not
fixed the problem.
