Trouble booting up

My XP home edition will not boot. There's a message that
the Windows\system32\config\system file has been
corrupted. It says I can fix it using the repair console.
I booted from my CD as instructed and clicked on repair
console but don't know what to do after that. Can you
please explain what I need to do? Thank you.
