Trivial, but annoying problem with DVD-Drive

For reasons unknown to me, my Vista Ultimate 64bit randomly opens the tray
of my DVD-Burner
without any order to do so and no matter if there are CDs (DVDs) inside the
drive, or not.

Has anybody an idea how to stop this pathtic "problem" ?

TIA

Duct Tape ? :)

Sorry, couldn't resist that, but seriously does this happen when
actually playing as well or just at random when not in use?

I don't have an answer but just replaced a Lite-On that would sometimes
record and sometimes not but either way showed no contents. Tried
drivers and all sorts of things but in the end threw it away.

This could be done programmatically of course, do you have anything
running that has a "Ready to burn" icon in the system tray or anything?
Could it be malware?

Seems to happen ramdomly and only when the tray is empty.
Ready to burn: NO
Malware: Unlikely

My Vista box will open the tray when I accidentally click on the drive icon
when the drive is empty.

Maybe some program is trying to access your drive.

The above seems silly, but what the heck, it might be correct...

To be honest it could be anything as the others have said - it could be
whatever burning program you use - constantly trying to load - (would be
my first opinion)
second would be to flash the firmware on the drive to the latest
version (if you dont know how to do this, read up - if you get it wrong
or install the wrong version you have a CD/DVD paperweight)
I don't think,it's the firmware, for the problem doesn't occur in the
2 Win XPs (Home and Pro), which are also installed on my PC.
Happens only in Vista.

PS: Thanks for the answers.
My Burning-Prog (CDBurnerXP) did never cause any problems
in years for me running on XP.
Maybe it has a problem in Vista.
I'll have a look.

OTOH, I use CDBurnerXP on this Vista machine with no problems.

Which proves nothing, I guess, software and OSes being what they are... :)

My WinDVD9 could be a possible cause of problems too?
I try to sort things out.

What hardware?
Desktop or laptop?
What model DVD-Burner?
My laptop likes to eject CDs when I turn it on. It has external "buttons"
(touchpad items built in above the keyboard) you can "press" (including
eject) which are easily pressed without trying to, by opening/closing it or
wiping off dust.

Pentium Dual Core E8500 on Gigabyte EP45-DS3L
Desktop (of course)
Burner: LG GH22NS40 with uptodate firmware

It sounds like a virus, or it maybe something you downloaded, because I
made a file on my laptop to over ride this stupid burning program that
would not eject the cd, I made a .VBS script that makes it open and
close, it may be something that you have hidden in the background of
your computer

No virus (almost certain!?), but yes, probably a compatibility issue.
