I went to enable cleartype fonts on my xp pro box. When
I went to desktop properties>appearance and clicked the
effects cmdbutton I got nada, nothing. Dont know how
this button got disabled but does anyone know how to
reenable it?

No dice I'm afraid. I should make clear that the button
is not greyed out...just futile to click it. I'm not
sure if some long uninstalled 3rd party app made
something screwy or what.

This is a copy of a conversation just a few posts down <hint>

Thanks to both for your suggestions. The problem surfaced again like I knew
it would. None of the fixes suggested actually made an immediate difference,
but thanks to your help I have found a way to restore it. Right-click My
Computer / Properties / Advanced / Performance / Visual Effects / Select
Custom then unheck Use Visual Styles on Windows and Buttons and apply. Then
recheck it and apply again - there we go, Bob's Your Builder, its all purty
again

thanks guys
