transfering programs

I'm getting a new compaq w/xp on it I have an older compaq
w/98se now. Is there a way to transfer files and programs
to the new box with out having to reinstall all of them
again? thanks Bill

You will have to install any programs you need on the new computer, but files and settings can be transferred with the included File and Settings Transfer wizard. Insert the XP setup CD on the old computer, then from the menu select the transfer option, from this computer. On the new computer, same process but selecting transfer to this computer. Hopefully you have a CD writer on each computer, or can network them together, because transferring by floppy is not a practical option with the sizes involved.

Transferring data files is easy. Depending on how much you have
to move, you can write diskettes, burn CDs, E-mail them to
yourself, or temprarily move the hard drive in the old box to the
new one.

Transferring programs is impossible (except for a rare trival
program). Programs have many references to themselves on the
drive, in the registry and elsewhere. All of these are lost when
you go to a new Windows installation.

You'll have to reinstall all your programs.
