How to transfer Vista Windows Mail files to XP Home and O2000 or OE6?

Ladies and Gentlemen:
My daughter's HP slimline desktop running Vista Home and Windows Mail puked
a motherboard and is not fixable (3rd identical problem but now out of
warranty--last hp/compaq I'll be buying...). I have a Compaq laptop running
XP Home and with Outlook Express 6 or Outlook 2000 both installed. I have the
hard drive out of the HP and hooked to the Compaq with an external USB
adapter and I can access files from the HP drive just fine but I can't run
any of the programs (of course). The Compaq is completely updated and running
SP3 and IE7.

How and where do I get the old Mail files from the HP and how can I bring
them into either mail program on the Compaq? I'd even be happy with text
versions and I'll extract her Email addresses, etc. from that.

Of note is that I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home I could hook the HP
drive to, if that helps. But the files will still need to go into OE6 or
O2000 unless you have another alternative.

What is Windows Live Mail? I am not in a hurry to get the latest/greatest
bloatware from Microsoft unless it will help me do what I need to do...
(extract Mail mail files and send them to XP)

Thanks for your help, Bob.

windows live mail is a newer version
of microsoft's mail client.

it can run side by side with o.e. so
you might try to install it and see
if you can "import" her messages
off the external drive.

--------------------

another solution is that perhaps
the messages are also stored on
the web.

for example, if she has a @hotmail.com
email address, then the messages were routed
to her computer via the hotmail web server

there may still be copies of those messages
may still be on the mail server.

just need to log open the web browser
and log into into the webmail accounts
like www.hotmail.com

similarly, there may be copies of the
messages stored in her account on
your isp's web mail server(s),

like yahoo, sbcglobal, att, comcast,
etc....

Thanks for the info, Ben!

BUT, no Hotmail here. We have our own host with associated Email server and
the mail is only stored there until it is accessed, then it is removed. I may
try the Live Mail but I already had a bad experience with IE8 and would love
to avoid any further "experiments" on behalf of Msoft.

I think you can any browser to
download the live suite.

live suite is a standalone suite
and doesn't utilize browsers
for it to function.

Back-up the EML files, transfer the back-up to the WinXP machine then drag
them into any open OE (not OL) folder. After doing so, you can export the
OE data to OL, if you wish, per
