New copy of XP

I have some older computers that cannot be replaced with a new one right now,
but need XP (upgrade from 98SE). Is there a way I can still get it from
somebody or have all retailers been prohibited from selling anything but
Vista?

Home situation, not work. Basically, the systems are minimally able to run
XP, but no way can they run Vista. Examples: Celeron 466 w/256M and 40M HD
(can't be upgraded beyond that RAM), P3-800 w/512M and 2-30M HDs (not
cost-effective to upgrade further and Vista compatibility checker demands
more RAM and 2x HD size). Also, many of the apps and games are older Windows
or even DOS versions which can't be run in Vista anyway.

Ideas? If I find somebody throwing out a trash XP box can I buy it for the
XP copy and transfer it to one of mine?

Copies of XP should still be around. eBay will have certainly them, so
should many retailers.

Stores like CompUSA and Circuit City still carry XP.

As I recall, they carried 98 for years after XP was released.

Yes, if it's a retail copy, but no if it's OEM. OEM copies are tied by their
license to the first computer they are installed on.
