Transfering files via USB network cable

I am trying to transfer files and settings from my old Laptop (Windows ME)
to my new laptop (Windows XP) using an old USB network cable (Laplink Gold
cable with black box between two ends of the USB cable). Can this be done
using the Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer wizard? I also have a USB
hub. Do I need to include that in this temporary network or can I direct
link the two computers with the one cable?

You don't need a USB hub to connect two computers using the Laplink
Gold cable. A USB hub isn't a networking device -- it lets you
connect multiple USB devices to a one USB port on one computer.

That cable will work with the File and Settings Transfer if, and only
if, Windows ME and Windows XP recognize it as a network adapter. To
see, look in Control Panel | Network (ME) and in Network Connections
(XP).

If it doesn't work, you can connect the two computers directly to each
other using a crossover cable between their Ethernet jacks. A regular
Ethernet cable won't work.
