I have a USB crossover cable left over from a "Transfer MyPC" software kit,
can I use this to set-up a peer-to-peer network with my Laptop?

TIA

Hmmm - "crossover" generally refers to Ethernet cables. I don't know about
your specific USB cable, but I wouldn't use that anyway. Why not just get
Ethernet cables - either a crossover for direct connectivity, or two
straight-through cables and a hub/switch?

Because my one enternet port on my pc is in use by my boradband modem so just
trying to make best use of what I have. So can it be done with a USB cable?

Without the software the cable will do nothing. With the software it will
allow whatever functionality the software allowed.

It's just the software is only deisgned to transfer files via it's own
limited application. I want to set up a simple network so I can use another
piece of software to synchronise files from Outlook on my laptop with my
desktop and the software that comse wiht the cable can't do that!

Then it can't be done. Sorry, but that's it.

Likely not. Why not invest in an inexpensive consumer
gateway/router/firewall appliance with a built-in Ethernet switch, so you
can connect your broadband modem to it and share it between multiple
computers on your LAN? You get an extra degree of security that way, too.

Well I have been told by a few techies it can be done, it's just a mater of
knowing how to set it up. Hence emailing here.

If you want to run a poll here, I bet we can find several other techies
who'll agree with me that it can't. :)
