Transfer Outlook 2002 Rules to Outlook 2003

Hi;

I've upgraded from Outlook XP (pop mail) running on XP SP2, to Outlook 2003
running on Vista; and all my Rules are marked in error.

I could spend an entire hour correcting each and every one (yes, as I've
been using MS Office since 1997, I've got that many rules ... and, believe me
I've already trimmed them down to about 1/5th of what they could be ...); or
.... I could try to re-import them, if someone can tell me how?

When I tried this in the past (going from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2002), I
was told that import isn't meant to work from an older version to a newer
version (I know, doesn't make sense to me either).

I'll tell you what I've done so far:

Used the MS Windows Easy Transfer program to transfer my Settings from the
XP pc to the Vista pc ... this successfully transferred my pst file for me
(this is where the rules have been since Office 2000).

Installed Office 2003, and ran the UPDATE (so I'm up to SP3 on MS Office).

Went into Control Panel MAIL to verify that Outlook had the correct account
info from my Windows logon.

Launched Outlook 2003, waited for it to build My Folders, and My Calendar,
and My Contacts, etc.; then ...

Took a look in Mail Rules, and received a pop-up that Rules were in error,
and had to shake my head when I saw that all (more than a 100) of them were
checked as "in error".

There doesn't seem to be any importing of these Rules either; because, when
I deleted the "in error" rules, and tried to re-import Rules, they were all
still "in error".

Perhaps, I must try to "export" the rules from Outlook XP (2002) into one of
the other listed formats; and then try to "import" the rules as one of those
formats ..?

I'd appreciate, either a pointer to a proven method, or a solution from some
kind soul ...

TIA

I'd use the Rules Wizard's export and inport functions.

Well, I tried to follow my own suggestion to export different types of rwz
files; but they all fail when I try to import them ...

I noticed one thing when I looked more closely at one of the rules "in
error", there's a check box that has been added: "for this machine only" ...

If I could set that value "globally", and have it apply to all rules that I
import, I'm sure I'd be good to go ...

Does it sound to anyone like I'm close?

p.s. I counted and I appear to have 450 rules (as I said before, I've
managed to trim down the number of rules, by combining multiple email
addresses from the same source).

Thanks ... M. D. Petrella

On top of path information, rules metadata includes the name of the machine
where the rule was created as well. Some people have avoided what you see
by having two sets of identical rules, one for each of the two machines.
ONe set will run on one system and the other will run when the PST is moved
to the second system.

Are you saying that some people have 2 different sets of Rules? depending on
which machine they're logged into?

That's not what I'm asking ...

What I'm saying (and I think this is common enough), is that I am no longer
going to use Outlook 2002 under XP on my old laptop, but I want to use
Outlook 2003 under Vista on my new laptop.

I've never, ever, been able to transfer Rules from an older version of
Outlook to a newer version ...

.... so why would Microsoft advertise that there is such a thing as a Rules
Transfer Wizard ... if it never works as advertised ...?

If I have to .. I'll spend the several hours it takes to re-build each of
the 450 Rules I have on my business logon (I'm sure I also have over 200 on
the family logon) ... just tell me where to request my refund for the fair
hourly wage I should be compensated to get around this glaring software
defect ...

Yes.

Sorry. I must have misinterpreted what you were asking. I though you
wanted a way for rules to survive being moved back and forth between to
systems and operate on each.

I have successfully moved rules by exporting them on one machine from Rules
and Alerts and importing them on another with Rules and Alerts, but not
specifically from OL 2002 to 2003.

Rules Transfer Wizard ... if it never works as advertised ...?

A lot of products from many companies never perform as advertised. Does
that surprise you?

Send the bill to Bill.
