Problem importing data from .pst into new install of Outlook 2003

My XP Pro SP3 laptop died suddenly, but I was able to retrieve the HDD from
it and can access it on my new laptop via a USB enclosure. The new laptop is
Intel Duo Core 64 bit running Vista Home Premium with 4GB RAM.

I installed my Office 2003 Professional with Outlook 2003 and Business
Contact Manager.

I can get my messages from the original HDD, but cannot get the email
accounts or the rules and alerts. I have tried two ways: I ran IMPORT to
bring in the data from the existing outlook.pst file, and I also simply
copied the existing outlook.pst file into the .pst directory. Neither method
brings in the email accounts or the rules. Further, when I tried to import an
older version of rules (.rwz), only a few import; the rest are missing
information and get deleted. (I have over a hundred rules.)

How can I retrieve ALL the data from my existing outlook.pst file?

Importing is never the method to connect your OUtlook data. Copy the .pst
file to My Documents or your User Documents folder (never overwrite the
default .pst file that is created when you installed Outloo).

Open Outlook and select File->Open Outlook Data File. NAvigate to the .pst
file in your Documents folder and open it.

Thank you for the third approach, which I had not tried. However, it does not
solve my problems.

I opened the .pst as you described, and the e-mail messages, contacts, and
calendar items load properly (thank goodness).

But, the e-mail accounts remain empty (I have about two dozen email
accounts) and the Rules and Alerts do not load (in fact, "RULES AND ALERTS"
has disappeared from m TOOLS menu bar).

1) Is there any way to recover my e-mail accounts? (TOOLS | E-MAIL ACCOUNTS
| VIEW OR CHANGE... is completely empty)

2) Why did TOOLS | RULES AND ALERTS disappear? How do I restore it?

3) If I cannot retrieve my rules (there are scores) from my .pst file, how
can I successfully import them from my last .rwz export?

Account settings are in the registry, not the .pst. You will need to
recreate them.

As for rules, are you in a mail enabled folder (like inbox) when looking for
the Rules and Alerts option on the Tools menu?

Yes, I was in an appropriate folder. The FOURTH TIME I ran "Detect and
Repair" was the charm; it suddenly reappeared.

Now I have the dreaded "other machine" disaster; 1/2 of my rules are
designated as such.
