Transfer files over Internet, WinXP

Hi,

Friend of mine and I now both have DSL and would like to directly transfer
files over the internet to each other, like photos and music. We're both
running WinXP. I'm pretty computer literate but my friend isn't. What might
be convenient ways to do that? I looked at FTP but it seems you upload and
download from a server, so if I'm running the server, I couldn't just
initiate transfers to the other computer, right? Tnx for suggestions.
