ftp hang when transfering files in subnet, HELP

hi

When I try to transfer (ftp, I use "core ftp lite") files from my winXP (pro
m/sp3) machine to my win2k3 machine the transfer after a while goes down to
a hault

It looks like this happens when transfering huge directories, like My
Documents, 6.7 Gb

The cause of this error is my 3com router, as it's the router which transfer
slowly, and after a while I lose internetconnection on all my computers. I
then have to shut down the router for a minute to get internet back on...

this is the router:
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3C857-US

So I was wondering if there are some ways to give around this problem? Like
if there is a setting in ftp where I can specify the speed of the transfer.
Can I reduce the speed?.

Reducing the speed will makes the file transfer take longer time, but I do
this file transfer because I wants to take backup of my computer. I can go
and watch telly while the file transfer is active. Most important is that
the files are secured...

any suggestions?

FAT32 partitions have a 4GB maximum file size. Check to see whether the problem
is related to the size of something being transferred. An NTFS partition
does not have that limit, but a much higher limit. I've stored an entire
disk image (~70GB file) on an NTFS partition.

Using Task Manager, watch the resource usage of your computer(s). Does
free memory drop, when you're using the tools ? For example, I have
to turn off my packet sniffer when doing large transfers, as otherwise
the packet sniffer will use up all the RAM during the file transfer.

If the tool used to make the file transfers has a "presistence" feature,
it may be able to pick up the transfer after it has failed. So even
if the computers needed to be rebooted, it might still be possible to
eventually complete the transfer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ftp

"The FTP protocol supports resuming of interrupted downloads using the
REST command. The client passes the number of bytes it has already
received as argument to the REST command and restarts the transfer.
In some commandline clients for example, there is an often-ignored
but valuable command, "reget" (meaning "get again"), that will cause
an interrupted "get" command to be continued, hopefully to completion,
after a communications interruption.

Resuming uploads is not as easy. Although the FTP protocol supports
the APPE command to append data to a file on the server, the client
does not know the exact position at which a transfer got interrupted.
It has to obtain the size of the file some other way, for example over
a directory listing or using the SIZE command."

That option is not available in all combinations of clients and servers,
so may take some experimentation to get working.
