touchpad no longer works after upgrade

I recently upgraded from Win98SE to XP and my synaptics
touchpad no longer works. I've updated the drivers from
synaptic, but Windows doesn't recognize that the touchpad
is even connected. It works fine in Linux, so I know it is
connected. Any suggestions? Thanks.

sounds like it is a driver problem, I would uninstall all the drivers for
the pad and the pad itself.
reboot and reinstall the drivers and let windows reinstall the pad
