Tool tips

The default tool tip setting seems to make tool tips disappear after a
few seconds.

Is there a general Windows setting for making them less transient?

Find/Create this item in the registry, and set it to the duration (in
seconds) you want them to last. Save it as hexadecimal.

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\TrayNotify\BalloonTip

That won't work, it is for "Balloon Tips" not "Tool Tips".

Thanks to krazymike for the proposed solution and to ju.c for the warning.

What is the difference between "Balloon Tips" and "Tool Tips"?

Is there a solution for "Tool Tips"?

A "Balloon Tip" is a popup info box for the Task Bar only.

A "ToolTip" is a popup info box for explorer files.

Select Start, Control Panel, System.Advanced, Performance Settings,
Visual Effects enables Customisation. The item I think might be of
interest is Fade or Slide Tool Tips into View. Uncheck and click on
Apply and the Tool Tip does not Fade.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your reply.

However, this doesn't seem to have the desired effect.

When I unckecked this option the desktop changed from Windows Classic
(which I prefer) to XP and I had to reset it to Classic, but the tool
tips still disappear after a few seconds.

Anyway, it isn't really a big issue, although I didn't expect it to be
so tricky to resolve... :)

No official MS fix for this "known" bug. Can really be a pain.
However, someone stopped waiting for MS to fix this and they made
their own Windows service to fix this:

Thanks, but I'm not sure this addresses my issue, i.e. I simply want to
prevent tool tips from disappearing after a few seconds...
