To require users to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE before logging on

OS: Windows XP Professional

The Help references an Advanced tab that doesn't appear in my help. Can
anyone tell me why?

To check for yourself:

1. Goto Start menu, Help and Support, and do a Search for "User accounts."

2. Look under Search Results, Suggested Topics, Pick a task, and click
on "Increase logon security."

Title: "To require users to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE before logging on"

Article: "You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group on a computer that is part of a network domain in
order to complete this procedure. Network policy settings may also
prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click the Advanced tab.
In Secure logon, select the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete check
box."

Thanks, Wesley, but that wasn't my question.

My question is about the disparity between what Help says I should see
in the Control Panel vs. what I actually see. (See below)

The Help references an Advanced tab that doesn't appear in my help. Can
anyone tell me why?

Here's an excerpt from Windows XP's Help and Support within XP:

"Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click the Advanced tab."

Huh??!! What Advanced tab?? Where?!?!

John,
The Help references an Advanced tab that doesn't appear in my help. Can
anyone tell me why?

Because this Help article is incorrect, wrong, not right, erroneous,
mistaken, flawed, borked....

To require users to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE before logging on
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...xp/all/proddocs/en-us/usercpl_secureboot.mspx

That article was probably written five or six years ago. I very much doubt
that it will be corrected now, if that is your point.

There are two User Accounts applets. userpasswords and userpasswords2.
Userpasswords2 is the one that has the advanced tab and Secure logon.

If your point is that you want to get to the advanced tab, here is how you
do it...

Start | Run | Type or paste: control userpasswords2 | Click OK |
Click the Advanced tab | In Secure logon, select the Require users to press
Ctrl+Alt+Delete check box.

Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
[[Specifies that users be required to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE in order to log
on to the computer.
Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE before logging on guarantees that the real Windows
logon prompt appears. Requiring the use of CTRL+ALT+DELETE increases
security and thwarts some Trojan horse programs. A Trojan Horse program
masquerades as a common program and enables unauthorized users to break into
the system.]]

Here it is at a Microsoft website.

Using CTRL +ALT+ DELETE KEYS for logging on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555476

The only way to get to the advanced tab on the userpasswords2 User Accounts
applet from the Control Panel is to Add ControlUserPasswords2 To Control
Panel, using AddUserPasswords2ToCP.reg from Kelly's site.

Thanks, Wes! That clears it up for me.

My point was: Is something wrong with my system?

You settled it by letting me know that the Help file is flawed.

Thanks again,

John
