Here is the error message

The current user account is not recognized. Restart the computer and then
open user accounts

Running XP HOME with SP2 and all critical updates.
When the welcome screen comes up, there are no users/icons to click on in
order to logon to each individuals desktop. There is more than one account on
the machine and some individuals have passwords. I can use the ctrl+alt+dlt
method at the welcome screen and it comes up with the classic login style.
When I type in a username and passowrd it will logon on as it should to the
particular user/desktop.
I cannot access User Accounts via the Control Panel. I get this msg "The
current user account is not recognized. Restart the computer and then open
user accounts". I did however type in "control userpasswords2 " in the run
box which allowed me to adjust user account settings. Users Must Enter a
Username and Password to Use this Computer is checked. I added a new account
with my name and set it up as administrator. On the advanced tab there is a
secure login checkbox. It says "For added security, you can require users to
press ctrl+alt+dlt before logging on". That box is checked.
I have done a repair reinstall, reset my administrator password with ERD,
typing , run nusrmgr.cpl won’t open user accounts.
And the real problem is Installing any new programs on this pc, some don’t
complete correctly. I have searched and found this problem before with all
questions and no answers

This same message appeared mysteriously on my computer this week. (1st
week of November, 2006). I used "System Restore" and went back to a
restore point a week earlier. The problem disappeared. I did have to
reload my McAfee Virus Scan because there were updates that had auto
loaded in the week that had passed from the earlier restore point, but
it only took about 10 minutes to delete MVS and reload it. Now
everything appears to be working okay.
