user account not recognized

Problem with Windows XP, user account with admin privileges. The welcome
screen opens just fine on reboot; all user accounts are displayed. I (dad)
has the only account with admin rights, all other accounts (users) are
limited. I can access the 'user account' page from the control panel in
every account, except for mine which is the only account with admin rights.
When I attempt to open the 'user accounts' page from the control panel in my
desktop, I get the message which reads:

'The user account is not recognized. Restart the computer and then open the
user accounts."

Of course, after rebooting, I get the same error message, and I cannot open
the user accounts from the admin desktop.

Any help is appreciated.

One of your users may have booted to Safe Mode, and logged on as the default
"Administrator" account, to change your user settings. It's also possible
that your profile is simply corrupt. Change to the default admin account in
safe mode, and see if you can recreate, and maybe copy the profile info to a
fresh account.

I am having the exact same problem as Mark and decided to tag along on his
thread. I've no idea when it could have started because I can't remember the
last time I needed to change anything within the user accounts. All user
accounts are shown on the welcome screen and are working just fine, but I get
the "user account not recognized....." message when trying to open "user
accounts" on the "control panel" page. How do I boot in safe mode and what
am I looking for when I do it?

Mark, sorry to have confused your name with Scotty's in my initial post.

I really don't think another user would have logged on in safe and changed
the settings. Is there anything else you feel I should check prior to
creating the new admin account?

The only thing in recent months that I can think of that required my going
into "different" parts of the computer was when I installed a Linksys router
some months back. Could the router installation somehow be connected to this
problem?

I'll wait for your reply before creating the new account.

No, I don't think the router had much to do with it. If a new account is not
what you want, you might have some "Permissions" problem in the registry. To
cure that I would reset my security settings to default.

One last try at it would be to create a new "Identity" in Outlook Express,
since that is what the error is saying that you are getting. (OE, File menu,
Identities, Add...)

Mark, after reading the article at the link you gave me, I decided to try
"system restore" first. I chose to retore to a date several months back
and it seemed to do the trick. I haven't a clue what the issue was, but
we're working great now!

Thank you so much for your help. You guys are all so helpful and
knowledgable and I appreciate it!
