"To free up disk space etc" on exit outlook newsreader

Hi

Am using Office 2k with XPpro. Outlook is set as default newsreader.

In the last week (possibly after the latest XP updates) when exiting
Outlook newsreader I get this annoying message box:- "To free up disk space,
Outlook Express can compact messages".

I cant see anything in tools/options to stop this happening. Has anyone got
a fix??

That's perfectly normal bnehavior. There's nothing to fix. However, ask in
an Outlook Express newsgroup or use OE's Help function to see if there is a
setting with which you can adjust that.

Now this has always puzzled me. Under IE Tools/internet options/ on the
programs tab you can choose between MS Outlook and Outlook express to use
for Newsgroups.

My newsreader toolbar is Titled "Microsoft Outlook Newsreader". Yet to all
intents and purposes it looks identical to outlook express.

Why give the option if it defaults to Outlook express anyway???

Yet I havent seen it before in all the years I've used it.

Perhaps the folders finally ballooned over the allotted size to trigger the
message??? Or maybe I always had a slight glitch in outlook express which
was fixed by one of the latest batch of updates???

Allowing it to compress the folders got rid of the annoying message which
solved the annoyance but I have the sort of mind which wants to know what
made it occur now.

They finally dispensed with this charade in current versions.
Outlook never has and never will be a newsreader. The option you saw to use
Outlook for reading news in older versions simply launched OE in "news only"
mode. But you would never know it since they titled the window "Microsoft
Outlook Newsreader." I've never understood why they felt the need to deceive
users.

Microsoft has used so much sleight of hand with Outlook they should be
embarrassed. The worst example was IMO mode of Outlook 98/2000 where people
were actually using OE for most of their mail functions, but never had a
clue that's what they were using. Go figure.

The "Microsoft Office Newsreader" is just a skin for Outlook Express. Try
starting OE once with the /outnews command line switch. Click Start>Run and
enter the following in the Open field:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

and see what you get,
