.tmp files

Excel 2000 is leaving the tmp file in the folder when any
spreadsheet is opened and closed. This is confusing to
the users and is wasting network drive space.
I found that it should be renaming and/or deleting these
files. Is this a feature or is there some setting I am
missing.

First question: you don't have a support contract with Microsoft?

Usually this sort of problem indicates that default user permissions on
network shares are something Excel can't work with. Also, network time outs.
I don't know the details, but if Excel works without problems saving files
to local media (e.g., C: drives), then the problem is almost certainly with
the network and its shares and not with Excel, making Excel newsgroups not
the best place to seek help.

Do you really mean the files have .tmp extensions?

I've seen excel save files and leave behind an 8 character (number/alpha) file.
(and xl will give a warning that the save wasn't successful.) But never any
..tmp files.

(Actually, I've seen .tmp files in the windows temp folder from excel--but never
anywhere else.)

Just some background:

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension).

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original and if that's successful,
xl will rename the funny named file to the original's name.

Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus
software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical
problems.

I think I'd start with the easiest stuff first. Try disabling the antivirus
software. If that didn't help, I'd yell at my IT/Network guys and see if it's a
permission problem (maybe do that first???).

=============
If it's a file with an extension of .tmp, I've seen posts that complain about
that. But never any resolution.

My guess has always been--maybe it's the antivirus software that's making
this--but I've never seen the AV program I use do this (Norton).
