.tmp files filling up my folders

Since I started to use Excel 2007, my folders are getting loaded with .tmp
files that Excel does not seem to be deleting. So I have to do it manually.
A Google search revealed that there is some discussion on the AVG message
boards about the problem, and I do use the AVG virus software. But I was
wondering if anyone has encountered this problem with Excel 2007 and has any
suggestions.

I don't think you're going to find an excel solution.

Excel isn't the thing that's making those files. (Although, I don't think I've
read that AVG is the antivirus program that does create these.)

Can you post some sample names of those .tmp files?

They are all eight letter/number combinations with the .tmp extension.

The latest is "9A825CF8.tmp".

I've never seen excel create any file named like this.

Excel will create those funny named files without any extension, though. You
sure they have those .tmp extensions?

If they don't really have those .tmp extentions...

If those .tmp files look like: ...\VB*.tmp

I searched google again for "\vb" and .tmp and got a few hits.

One person posted that they saw files that had names like: ~RF26c83af.TMP.

It was caused by AVG.

A while ago, someone posted back that uninstalling something called "Panda
ClientShield" fixed a similar problem.

Even if you're not running "Panda ClientShield", you could try disabling this
program to see if the problem goes away.

ps. I didn't remember correctly. That thread from Wendy (#7) does indeed point
to AVG as the culprit.

I have, occasionally, seen files like "9A825CF8.tmp". I think it's when
you're doing a copy/ paste of a large file. You have to be quick with
Windows explorer to see it. Sometimes, presumably when the operation is
interrupted, it doesn't delete its 'working file'. Apologies for being
vague but I see it so infrequently and even then don't pay much attention.

You could try 'Disk Cleanup' (Windows Explorer) which should delete .tmp
files or Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/ which I find does a better job
of deleting redundant files.

I just started experiencing this in Excel 2003...only it uses the same name
as the file I just closed out of and saved....but the "filename.tmp" remains
behind, sometimes in multiple copies...is this an "autosave" issue?

It's not from excel--well, not from excel out of the box.

Maybe you have a macro that's creating the file and not cleaning up after
itself.

Or maybe it's your antivirus program. You may want to share the name of your AV
program--or even temporarily disable it to see if the problem goes away.

This is not a AVG problem this is an Excel 2007 problem my boss has the
latest Norton installed on his new computer and his computer generates .tmp
files every time he closes a Excel document. Microsoft need to admit that
here is a bug in Excel 2007 and fix it. I know it is Excel because that is
the only program that generates these files if it was AVG it would not be
limited to Excel and everyone is having the same problem if you search on
Google this is a popular problem for Excel users. What about my bosses
computer with Norton on it not AVG.

I just found the same thing on a brand new laptop running XP Pro SP2 and
Excel 2007. Every time the spreadsheet is changed a new .tmp file is
generated. The computer has AVG, but I'm certain that's not the problem
since AVG has no way of creating a file with the identical data as the .xls
file only with a .tmp extension. What's going on here?
