TIF folders problems

B

Burt

I'll start here: I right clicked a picture in IE6 that I wanted
to save and only selection was bmp and I know it was a jpg so
I went and dumped the TIF files along with cookies as normal and
all offline content...
Under the SETTINGS button I looked and this is what I saw.
Then I noticed that the amount of space alloted
to TIF's was set at 0, so I tried the slider and it slides but won't
do anything, so I manually changed the number from zero to several
different numbers and hit apply and get an error window that says
"You have to select a number between 1 and 10 MB's." Well it doesn't
work. Then I noticed just above that, that it doesn't tell you
the pathway to the TIF files.
On my 98 machine, it says that
the Current Location is: C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files.

Nowthen, why are there TIF folders in all these different places?
and why no pathway to the one that should take care of Internet
Explorer? Should I hit the MOVE FOLDER button and send it
somewhere? But WHERE? With all these other folders I am a
bit confused as to where TIFs should go..
Below is a list of WHERE all these folders are residing.
* * * *
Temporary Internet Files FOLDERS found in:

C:\Windows\Temp Content IE5 NO

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings
Content IE5 yes, but no subfolders.

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings
Content IE5 yes, but no subfolders

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\Local Settings
Content IE5 no and no subfolders.

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\My Documents
Content IE5 no and no subfolders

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\Local Settings\Temp
Content IE5 yes, no subfolders

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile\Local Settings
Content IE5 yes, 4 subfolders with 3 to 5 or more files in each.

Why?
Sorry for the long post, but couldn't explain it in much less wording.
Thanx for any help as usual.

JAX,
I don't think you read it ALL.... There are other problems
than what are at the top.
Thanx,

Hi Burt,

Go to IE/Internet Options/Delete Files. Also in Settings change the amount
to 40 MB. This will help in preventing the index files from becoming
overloaded.

Temp Files: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Delete Temporary Internet Files
Temp Files: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp & TIF
Cookies: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Cookies
History: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\History

To have hidden folders shown, go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder
Options/View:

Check: Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files

Hi Burt,

You are right, I didn't read all of your post. I'm afraid I have no answer
for you. Hopefully, someone else will.

Kelly,
I don't think you read all the way down my quest either..
Do you know WHY there are TIF folders scattered all over
in this machine... It is only a week and a half out of the box new.
XP PRO 3 GB processor, 1 GB ram, 256 MB Video and two 120 HD's.
It is a fast one for sure, but I don't understand ALL of these TIF folders
all over the place... Have you ever seen that before?
Please read ALL of my original post above..
Thanx as always,
Burt

JAX

Hi Burt,

I looked a bit and it seems that they may be parts of your installed
applications. I have a few.

LOL, JAX

Thanx JAX,
I have never had TIF folders all over the place like this and I
don't think it is right... I am hoping to get to the bottom of this.
I have a friend in a HIGH place (ha ha) and I am going to hit on
him...

Do as you will. Actually, TIF files can be anything from little cute things
like duck's pictures to part of anything on your system. My suggestion is,
leave them alone.

And when you do, please do share. We deal with many 'high' people here.
)

Good luck, Burt.

What does this gobbly gook mean

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\Local Settings
Content IE5 no and no subfolders.

If you've been dragging and dropping folders anything could have happened.

David,
No, I haven't been dragging and dropping folders. This machine
is new out of the box about a week ago and runs great, but I was
looking around in Explore and here are all these Temporary Internet
File folders everywhere as you see in above posts... I have never seen
it before like this on any computer. What I mean by the Content IE5
under them main location is that some of the TIF folders have Content
IE5 when expanded and with subfolders and others do not have it
and why is there TIF folders in some of the TEMP folders that are
also quite a few places?
I have used your knowledge before over the years on posts that
were made by others and hope maybe you have some insight to
this one.. FYI, I am not exactly a new user.
Thanx for any help on this issue.
Burt

Delete them all (the whole folders in explorer), tell me your user name, tell me what's left as you can't delete all of them. Then reboot and tell me if any more have appeared.

Then export these keys from the registry. (r/c key - export)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserShell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

The desktop.ini files are responsible for the false view in Explorer.
Never trust Explorer, it's a liar. :D

Try to search for index.dat files with "Find files".
Then, try the command : attrib /S index.dat
from a command prompt. It shows all the index.dat files on your disk.
Explorer and "Find files" lie about special folders. You will never
see all the index.dat files with Explorer or with a DIR command, even
with all the switches. The attrib command is the only able to say
the truth. Strange, isn't it.

I quit Explorer a long time ago. You can use Winfile for XP :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/WINFILE.EXE (250 KB)
I use Total Commander, the best file manager.

David,
As for the username, Geezer.
I am not sure if you wanted me to send you the Exported Reg files or not.
Please advise on that.
In digging around some more, there is also Cookie folders in lots of
places as well as quite a few History folders scattered around the tree
and some of them have +sign and when clicked they show a IE5 Content
folder and most of the Content folders are empty.
As for the TIF folders that won't delete: see below:
Temporary Internet Files FOLDERS found in:

C:\Windows\Temp Content IE5 yes 4 subs TIF folder Won't delete

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\TIF folder
Content IE5 yes, but no subfolders. Won't delete

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\TIF folder
Content IE5 yes, but no subfolders Won't delete

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\Local Settings\TIF folder
Content IE5 yes and no subfolders. Won't delete

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\My Documents\TIF folder
Content IE5 no and no subfolders Yes, did delete this one OK.

C:\Documents and Settings\Geezer\Local Settings\Temp\TIF folder
Content IE5 yes, no subfolders Won't delete

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile\Local Settings\TIF folder
Content IE5 yes, 4 subfolders empty Won't delete

Also, in IE/TOOLS/Internet Options on the General tab it does now
show the location of the TIF's files, but when you go to the pathway
shown, the folders are empty, but when you click VIEW FILES from
the General tab, it shows all the TIF files. Why don't they show up
in the SAID destination folder in Explore? This has got me going.

Sorry to be such a pest, but I would like to get to the bottom of this.
To only refresh memories here;
This is a New Dell XPS 2nd generation running XP PROSP1 and loaded.
FYI, I have NO games on this computer other than what came from MS
on delivery. I have run updated Ad Aware, Spybot, and VScan (McAfee)
and all comes up clean.
Hope we figure this out.
Thanx again David,
Burt
