Until recently I could enjoy use of the thumbnails view for graphics files I use (such as .jpg). Now these files are not displayed as they should be, but rather as an unrecognized file (e.g. treated as a non-graphics file)

How do I fix this to the way it used to be

The only thing I have done recently is to install a trial version of Phtoshop Elements 2.

To reset a filetype like this, hold down the SHIFT key while right-clicking
a JPG file. Choose Open With. Then pick the program you want to use,
Internet Explorer is the default. Select the box that says "Always use this
program to open these files" and click OK.
