Thread mark as read

Hello,
using Newsgroups with Windows Mail is evil or I do not understand the
meaning of
Edit->Mark as Read
and
Edit->Mark Conversation as Read

e.g. I go down into a thread of a conversation and I want to mark (only) the
branch of one Conversation as Read. What should I do?
This is one of the most popular functions for newsgroup readers!
Please give me an advice. Perhaps I should use some other program
(thunderbird ...)

WinMail has no provision for marking a branch as read of Edit | Mark as
Read.

Select the first message in the branch and then hold down the Shift key
while selecting the last. Then right click the selection and choose Mark as
Read.

Thanks for your answer that possibility I recognized for myself.

Another perhaps quicker method is to collapse the branch (in front of it
should be the plus sign) mark this first message an press Ctrl-Q.
