Problem: my new Dell with Windows XP home edition has
developed a problem with its windows installer. It
happened after I was infected with a couple of viruses
that Norton AV quarantined. Then Norton stopped working
properly and so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it
that's when I discovered the problem. The error is: Error
1304 Error writing to file C:\program
files\symantec_client_Security\symantec
Antivirus\SCANDRES.dll Verify that you have access to that
directory. Then it rollsback the installation. I have
tried to load the newest version and several older
versions of Norton AV and a new version of McAfee with the
same results. I have tried to install these anti virus
programs using a CDROM and a pen drive. So it's probably
not a CDROM problem as the error 1304 indicates.
Question: How can I reinstall just the Windows Installer?
or, do I need to reinstall the Windows XP OS? Or can I run
a repair of XP and will that repair the windows installer.
Can I run a command that just deletes the OS and not my
files much like the old Deltree command and if so what
EXACTLY is the command needed to delete just the OS so I
can reload Windows XP home ED? Thanks in advance to the
Guru with the correct council.
