error installing VC++Redistributable 2005...

hi,

i get Error 1304.Error writing to file:

C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\Policies\x86_policy.
8.0.Microsoft.VC08.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_x-
ww_77c24773\8.0.50727.762.policy

when installing this package under XP Home SP3.

some posts on the Internet lead me to believe I can just delete the
folder above under winsxs... (not winsxs itself...)

but, this is a live production pc and i got a bad feeling about
deleting anything in the side-by-side...?

anyone got any input?

Try copying the SxS folder to another hard drive to back it up before making
any modifications or deleting subfolders that you may want to replace. Then
if you make an error you can just copy back the entire SxS subfolder to the
Windows folder. Did you already try using Add/Remove programs to remove
other versions of VC++ 8 runtime?
