Font files have disappeared from the folder but are still listed inthe registry???

After going around the world, I'm still at a loss. I'm desperate and
hope somebody can help me. I'm running Windows XP, and I'm trying to
install the Office 2007 Home and Student Edition. I uninstalled Office
2003 before starting the new install. Not sure if that caused the
problem. Anyway, when trying to install 2007, I keep getting a 1304
error saying that I don't have access to the C:\WINDOWS\Fonts
directory, and it can't write the GOTHIC.TTF file. If I try to open
the Fonts folder through explorer, it just hangs. If I go into DOS and
do a dir *.* command, it doesn't list any font beginning with any
letters past E*.*. And what's interesting is right after the last
font file is listed, it says File not found instead of giving all the
drive space info. I went to this entry in the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
and all the fonts are listed on the right like they're supposed to be
- all the way to w*.*. Something really screwy is going on. Does
anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks!!!

Did you verify the permissions on the Fonts folder and and its child
objects? Make sure that you have full control over this folder and make
sure that the child objects inherit the permissions from the parent. To
fix this, grant yourself full control on the folder then in the Advanced
Security Settings make sure that the child objects inherit from the
parent and replace the permission entries on all child objects. If
still no joy do as suggested in another post and ask the experts in one
of the Office groups.

Run chkdsk and see if that clears it up.
