Windows XP won't install as an upgrade over ME. Since I
can't install it, I can't get a Product ID. Without a
Product ID, I can't access online support. So apparently
my options are to pay $35 or to eat the cost of the XP
software that won't work.

Did you buy a RETAIL or OEM copy of Windows XP to upgrade with?

OEM (not in a nice box - usually a cardboard backing and cellophane
wrapping) copies cannot be used for upgrading without formatting.

XP will install as an upgrade over ME but it is usually best to do a clean
install. Have you run the compatibility wizard off the XP cd to see if your
hardware is compatible?

Why? What error message are you receiving?

What happens if you try? (run the CD under the ME system, start install,
continue with Upgrade)
